What was the best part of the experience?
The best part was working with the students, but of course, that has nothing to do with Sylvan corporate.
What would you change about the experience?
Knowing what I know now. I never would have bought the franchise and opened a second Sylvan center.
Feedback:
What I found was Sylvan was unhelpful. To give you an example, the Covid shutdown hit everyone at the same time. The first time I heard from Sylvan was in August during a call for the franchisees. On that call, they made an announcement about how they contacted every franchisee. They simply did not contact me, and I had just opened a new center at the end of January which was delayed because of Sylvan technical incompetence and dishonesty. They actually lied about when they sent out Sylvan's router while providing me with the FedEx tracking number. Another issue was their marketing and paid search. Unbeknownst to me, Sylvan changed my paid search to a 35 mile-radius. The bulk of my potential customers are 7 miles from the center. The result was my centers would show up in towns and hamlets that were 45 minutes away versus my own community. This wrecked my centers. Sylvan was unresponsive and ultimately dismissive of the damage that was done.
