Client Review on USA Insulation (USA INSULATION CONTRACTORS, LLC)
Feedback:
We had our home insulated (attic and walls) less than 90 days ago, and while I can say our home is staying warmer/cooler and quieter, that is probably the only positive part of the experience. The insulation works, my son’s bedroom was 9 degrees warmer the first night, with no changes to the thermostat. When the job was sold, I wish I had been warned my house would look like swiss cheese and be taking on water after they were done. We live in an older home, and I expect that updates will be messy, difficult, and expensive, but I could have better prepared if the sales representative had given me clear expectations of how the job would work. The first problem was with how the job was sold. We have a wood sided home, built in the 1950's. The sales rep that came to give our estimate told us that the installers would remove a whole piece of exterior siding in the middle of each floor, fill above and below with foam, replace the siding and we would be left with the paint touch ups to reseal where they had to break the paint. When the installer arrived the morning the job was to be completed, he informed me that they wouldn’t be able to use that method because of the sheathing, and instead had to drill holes. Our home is 2,800 square feet, and over 240 holes, 2” in diameter, were drilled in our siding. These holes were “patched” with pine plugs, and a single coat of interior/exterior patching compound slapped on. The installers were very professional, worked quickly, and did an excellent job with getting our home warm, but I would not recommend them to be putting plugs and patch on the house. Interior holes were just as bad, if not worse, because they were patched with Styrofoam circles (equivalent to a disposable cooler), and the same patch compound.Because the installation method was misrepresented, I did not have painters lined up to take care of the exterior repair work, and their schedule was backed up several months. I was told the patch compound would be fine in the weather while we waited for the painters to come, that has proven to be false. Anywhere rain hits a patch, the compound has degraded and our siding and the plugs are soaking up water. The painter is spending this week digging out soaked pine plugs and scraping sloppy patch off the siding. The exterior repairs were close to $2,000, on top of what it cost to have the house insulated, which was a large investment. I can’t tell you what interior drywall repair cost because a family member helps us with it, but it was just as bad as the exterior. We have had to remove all the Styrofoam plugs and replace them with drywall plugs, which could have been done in the first place. Drywall contracts and expands with the seasons, Styrofoam doesn’t, the patches cracked. In hindsight, I would have hired a general contractor to coordinate the job between an insulator, drywaller and painter. Our house is warm, which is what I hired USA Insulation for, but the aftermath has been a terrible headache, and unnecessary cleanup because of sloppy workmanship. If you decide to go with USA Insulation, I’d recommend asking for one of the installers to come look at the job and give you the specifics of where drilling will occur, and be sure to have your drywaller and contractor or painter lined up to immediately do the repair work. I am happy with how the attic work went, but overall, I am disappointed and would not recommend the experience of wall insulation.
